Multiple current and former staffers tell TN Repro News leadership at Planned Parenthood Southeast (PPSE) has consolidated around senior executives with little or no reproductive-health experience, many with corporate ties to CEO Mairo Akposé.
Those sources describe centralized decision-making, sidelined checks, and pressure that they characterize as unsafe and off-mission. They point to Sept. 30, 2025, when PPSE eliminated every Public Policy and Organizing role across Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, as the clearest inflection point, capping months of restructuring that thinned education, disrupted grants, and replaced IT/Security leadership.
Staffers trace the shift to Akposé’s entry via HR/people operations and a rapid expansion of her role in the organization. Subsequent senior hires, they say, drew from corporate healthcare and related circles rather than reproductive-health or nonprofit pipelines, forming an outside network that has raised safety concerns in internal descriptions reviewed by TN Repro News.
An internal email shows a senior vice president asking a PPSE program director whether the affiliate had ever partnered with Students for Life, one of the country’s leading anti-abortion organizations. Staff argue that a question like that, from leadership inside any Planned Parenthood affiliate or repro organization, signals severe gaps in reproductive-rights literacy and introduces serious safety risks.
The ways conversations are happening, or rather, not happening, have changed as well. Staffers describe check-ins canceled; “town halls” one-way; chat and Q&A disabled. They add that budget controls rebranded as “waste/fraud” efforts have restricted advocacy-facing teams and slowed routine operations.
Documents reviewed by TN Repro News and staff familiar with operations outline recent structural changes:
Grants: leadership cut in Oct. 2024, disrupting restricted-fund pipelines and reporting.
Education: capacity pared back through late 2024–2025; key roles no longer in place.
IT/Security: leadership replaced in 2024–2025 and functions shifted to outside associates; staff cite continuity and safety concerns.
Policy & Organizing: on Sept. 30, 2025, all roles across GA/AL/MS were eliminated, removing PPSE’s in-house legislative tracking, coalition work, and field mobilization.
Technical documentation reviewed by TN Repro News further flags procurement and security weaknesses that will not be shared further here to protect those processes.
Staffers emphasize that PPSE’s safety and mission rely on leaders with deep reproductive-health expertise, fluency in patient flow, Southern legal constraints, clinic security, coalition dynamics, and the ethical boundaries of policy and education. Replacing movement-rooted managers with a corporate cohort, they say, erodes those guardrails precisely as abortion, contraception, and sex-ed face heightened pressure. Expert leaders, they argue, are more urgent now than ever.
Sources who spoke on background are coming to the press as a last resort. They say they are deeply dedicated to Planned Parenthood Southeast and want the affiliate to succeed, but internal attempts to resolve concerns failed. Everyone TN Repro News spoke with shared the same desire: to protect colleagues and patients and realign PPSE with its mission. They are doing this to protect the mission—not themselves.
Public statements and campaign materials note that former staff and allies launched the campaign Save PPSE on Oct. 8. Organizers report 415+ signers by Oct. 13, including former board members, donors, partner-org executives, physicians, doulas, and legislative staff, and an @saveppse account topping 400 followers within days.
Groups including Amplify Georgia Collaborative, SisterSong, and Access Reproductive Care – Southeast continue services and organizing across the region.
TN Repro News requested comment from PPSE, but no response was received.
